Quantitative Mapping of Coastal Habitats and Natural Resource Distributions: Application to Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island

by Deborah P. French, Applied Science Associates, Inc, Narragansett, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '91

Abstract:

Effective management of the coastal zone is dependent on the availability of accurate information on the distributions of natural resources in both time and space. However, comprehensive and quantitative mapping of the distributions of natural resources is extremely difficult and costly to accomplish. An effort in mapping habitats and natural resources in and around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, has been undertaken, using physical, geological and chemical information, remote sensing and time-effective field ground-truthing. The mapping is in both digital and atlas format, and will be available for scientific, management and educational uses.
