Abstract:

In a recent study the authors examined the effect of the nonlinear behavior of soil on the axial and lateral response of one or two piles due to monotonic and cyclic pseudodynamic loading using a three-dimensional finite element model. Special attention was given to analyzing the specific role of several factors, such as relative slippage or separation between a pile and the soil, and soil plasticity away from the pile, on pile response. Guided by the results of a parametric study, a simplified one-dimensional model for a single pile was developed and tentatively extended to two piles and to dynamic response. This paper presents a concise summary of some main results.
