Abstract:

Numerical experiments are done with a continuum plasticity program in order to study the initiation and evolution of shear bands. Many elements are used in order to resolve families of shear bands. The angles of the bands and the stress conditions within the bands are found to be consistent with the bifurcation theory of localization. It is found that there is a lateral inhibition mechanism between neighboring bands that may help determine band spacing.
