Abstract:

An analytical method and numerical results for predicting the existence of chaotic response of rocking rigid objects subjected to harmonic horizontal based excitation are presented. It is shown that the divergent nature of the rocking motion together with the transition nonlinearity associated with impact constitute the major cause of extreme sensitivity of the rocking response.
