Abstract:

Orthopaedic management of early stage osteonecrosis (ON) of the femoral head is aimed at delaying or preventing collapse of structurally weakened regions of repairing dead bone. The advent of pre-collapse lesion detection by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has opened the way for clinically relevant studies of necrotic femoral head pathomechanics, using the finite element method (FEM). This presentation summarizes the current status of biomechanical work in that area.
