Abstract:

In a stationary atmosphere, the free-surface progressive wave motion in a real fluid of uniform depth is analysed by using Navier-Stokes equation, and its mechanism is described in first-order approximation. Based on the momentum conservation, it is shown that the tangential stress occurring at the free surface will dynamically induce a normal pressure there, and having difference ? /2 in phase with the tengential stress.
