Abstract:

An expert 'critiquing' system is under development to assist in operating San Francisco's multi-reservoir water supply system. This computer application goes beyond a 'traditional' expert system by refining (rather than supplying) the operator's proposed plan through a critique, which includes suggestions for improvement, warnings, and alternatives. In addition to operational benefits, the expert critiquing system can be useful in training novice operators, and it is a means to institutionalize and formalize decades of operating expertise.
