Abstract:

Graphical constructions are discussed that enable the performance of iterative structural optimization processes to be evaluated visually. The first, a basins of attraction construction, reveals the relationship between starting design and final outcome of an iterative process. The second, a phase space representation, reveals the nature of the path connecting the starting design with the final outcome. The significance of these graphical constructions is discussed in relation to the field of structural optimization.
