Abstract:

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project Office (YMSCPO) has been given the responsibility for characterization of the potential repository site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, and the responsibility of informing and working with the citizens of Nevada on issues associated with the Project. In support of these responsibilities, the Project Office has begun a preliminary review of potential railroad routes to Yucca Mountain for the transportation of high-level radioactive waste. An extensive effort has been undertaken to integrate the route review evaluation with public and local government concerns.
