Abstract:

The recently enacted waste minimization legislation, SB 14 (Roberti) places an additional regulatory burden on manufacturers in the Bay Area. The requirement for waste minimization plans will bring about greater interest in methods to achieve practical waste reduction. Several alternatives and technologies which are available to the local industry are reviewed. Effective technologies for source reduction, including ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and solvent extraction are highlighted to summarize their applications, permit requirements, and impacts on achieving practical waste minimization.
