Abstract:

The Montana Department of Highways experienced premature rutting in some asphalt concrete pavements primarily on the east-west interstate in Eastern Montana. Montana participated with the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (WASHTO) to study the causes of premature rutting and to make definitive recommendations to reduce its occurrence. This paper summarizes the materials and construction specifications and procedures that were changed and follow-up procedures that were implemented.
