Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Serviceability and Durability of Construction Materials

Abstract:

Several trends in the use of materials in civil engineering have made it imperative to improve the ability to predict the durability of masonry. This will require more emphasis on materials science rather than on the traditional materials testing approach. Materials science involves the development of models of materials composition and behavior from first principles. In other fields such as electronics, materials science has made great progress through a combination of theoretical breakthroughs and advances in methods for imaging and analysis. Some possible applications to masonry materials are described.
