Abstract:

Wood composites, known collectively as Structural Composite Lumber (SCL), are a family of wood-based products that better utilize the available wood fiber of a tree. This paper describes the composition of the various SCL products and their key attributes that provide marked improvement over conventional timber. Current applications of the material in bridge structures are mentioned and future developments necessary for greater acceptance by the design community and code authorities are described.
