Water Power Resource Investigations in New Zealand

by Epm Brown, Electricorp Production, New Zealand,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Ocean Energy Recovery

Abstract:

The New Zealand wave resource is dominated by strong uniform swell incident on its western and southern coasts. Electricorp Production has funded the deployment of a wave rider buoy off the south of the South Island to measure the wave resource in detail and has also funded a trial using an onshore long period seismograph to measure micro seismic activity. The land based microseismic recordings are processed and related to the wave energy. If this trial is successful then the onshore seismometer will be used to record long term data, i.e. year to year variations and long term averages.
