Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has chosen Yucca Mountain, Nevada for characterization to determine if it is suitable to become the Nation's first High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository. This paper examines the historic background for the choice, the regulatory requirements, and the studies made necessary by its arid setting to determine its viability as a permanent repository
