Floodplain Management for Alluvial Fan Areas

by Cecelia Rosenberg, Federal Insurance Administration, Washington, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulics/Hydrology of Arid Lands (H?AL)

Abstract:

Because current National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) regulations do not address the special floodplain management requirements of Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) on alluvial fans, many fast-growing juridictions within the arid and semiarid sections of the United states need guidance to regulate new construction within these high hazard floodplains. This paper describes the approach that the Federal Insurance Administration (FIA)/Office of Loss Reduction (OLR) will take to the development of Federal floodplain management regulations that fit more closely the needs of arid west communities.
