Abstract:

In the 1985 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) [1], level of service (LOS) designation for urban and suburban arterials is predicted on the average travel speed by section and for the entire arterial. The procedure is available in the Highway Capacity Software Package (HCS) for execution on microcomputer systems. A microcomputer model has been designed and coded to produce realistic LOS estimates for urban and suburban arterials. At present, the model scope is limited to 10 signalized intersections, but can be readily extended to incorporate a larger number by increasing the array sizes of the various parameters. A description of model components is given.
