The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of artificial intelligence technologies, especially expert systems, as they may relate to highway engineering and operations. Included are: A definition of expert systems and the types of problems they are useful for. Procedures for and major problems encountered in developing expert systems. How to identify potential application areas and conduct planning for the development of expert systems considering staffing, funding, time and hardware. Examples of expert systems applications and potential new applications areas. Examples of potential applications for robotics and for machine vision.
