An ASTM Standard Practice is under development as a national consensus standard on how to make and validate predictions of the long-term behavior of waste package materials in a deep geologic repository. The need for such a standard arose from U.S. regulatory requirements for the disposal of radioactive wastes that address containment and release rates of radionuclides over long periods of time. These impose unprecedented technical problems regarding the ability to make such predictions as well as statements of reliability of those predictions. The standard could impact the DOE repository program test work. Regulatory concerns are discussed.
