Abstract:

A model has been developed to assess the effect of calcite dissolution and precipitation reactions on the transport of 14C through a saturated, calcite-containing buffer material. The model has been used to calculate 14C concentrations in the buffer for an exponentially decreasing release pulse. Preliminary results show that the calcite reactions retard the transport of 14C in the buffer. Moreover, for the system parameters used in this study, it is shown that the long-term effects of calcite can be adequately simulated by an equivalent Kd model.
