Abstract:

Alameda County Water District reports on the planning, design and construction of a 48-inch water main installed under modern urban circumstances. The location of the pipe and the construction practices had to meet the approval of five regulatory agencies and satisfy various environmental criteria. Eighteen percent of the alignment features tunneling or boring and jacking in order to pass under an interstate highway, two railroads, a local parkway, and two residences. The provision for crossing a major earthquake fault is also described.
