Abstract:

Distributions of both normal and tangential earth pressures acting on three flexible model pipes having different wall thicknesses were successfully measured in centrifuge model tests. The accuracy in the measurement was checked by comparing bending strains measured along the pipe circumference with bending strains calculated under the measured earth pressure conditions, together with by the external force equilibrium. The effects of both density of model sand ground and pipe installation type on the measured earth pressures were also discussed.
