Abstract:

Protection of spacecraft from the effects of a meteoroid/debris particle impact can add significant weight to the required structure. This paper discusses the meteoroid and debris environments and their implication on the design of the SSF habitable modules. Protection requirements, testing, analyses, and primary and secondary effects of hypervelocity impacts are also addressed. Finally, recommendations are made for future activities related to the development of a hypervelocity impact protection system design.
