Abstract:

The spectral theory is applied to the response of bridges under a Poissonian stream of vehicles moving with constant speed over the bridge. The vehicles are modeled as oscillators with random masses, the bridge surface as a Gaussian process with given spectral density. It is found that the surface roughness can produce non-negligible additional loads but, for normal road traffic, no dynamic interaction between vehicles and bridge need to be considered.
