Abstract:

A practical reliability model for the safety assessment and rating of existing R.C. bridges are developed by explicitly incorporating the degree of deterioration and damages based on available inspection or test data. The stable configuration approach is used for an approximate but conservative estimation of the system reliability of existing bridges. It is suggested that the system reliability index be used as a rating criterion for bridge rehabilitation. Also, a reliability-based LRFR (Load and Resistance Factor Rating) is proposed.
