Abstract:

The authors have examined the applicability of reliability-based design to the existing reinforced concrete box culverts for installing power supply cables. The lowest safety index of the members of existing box culverts for each failure mode by bending moment and shear force is designated as the possible level of target safety index (?T) of the mode. Thickness and reinforcement of each member to meet the corresponding failure modes are computed. The results of the redesign show that concrete volume and reinforcement can be reduced 13% and 15%, respectively.
