Abstract:

The statistical fatigue properties of unidirectional (UD) T800/3631 carbon/epoxy composite laminates are investigated in this paper. Fatigue tests were conducted under rotating bending. Replication tests at four stress levels have been performed to characterize the scatter in the number of cycles to failure. It is emphasized, as a result of the present work, that a three-parameter Weibull probability model should be used in characterizing the fatigue life distribution of the composite laminates of concern. A data pooling technique is then discussed that allows the determination of a common fatigue shape parameter which is independent of stress level. Discussions are also made on the reliability-based fatigue design methodology of UD carbon/epoxy laminates.
