Abstract:

A method for detection of linear/nonlinear characteristics of mechanical systems excited by stationary Gaussian processes is presented. Linear systems under consideration show always a Gaussian response, higher moments are given uniquely by the first two ones. However, the higher moments of nonlinear systems differ from the linear case, even if the first two moments are equal. The difference between the moments of order four calculated from the first two moments and the fourth order moments measured directly are used for the detection of the system's nonlinearity. The relative difference of those moments result in a degree of nonlinearity.
