Abstract:

A basic formulation is developed for the nonlinear stochastic finite element method. It is based on the perturbation method and retains its advantage, namely that a nonlinear finite element analysis needs to be done only once. Based on this, the gradients (sensitivity) of the structural response with respect to a system parameter is evaluated as in the linear case. The proposed formulation can cope with a wider class of nonlinear problems including load path dependent problems. An elasto-plastic truss which is subjected to unloading and a geometrically nonlinear shell are analyzed to demonstrate the potential of this method.
