Abstract:

This paper describes CONSTRUCTION PLANEX as a prototype of a knowledge-based construction process planner. CONSTRUCTION PLANEX is a knowledge-based system that generates project plans for the excavation and erection of concrete and steel frame buildings. Starting with a description of a building in terms of its unitary components (e.g., columns, beams, etc.), the system computes quantities-take-off, identifies construction activities, selects appropriate resources, estimates activity durations and costs, and prepares project schedules based on the construction planning knowledge stored in its knowledge base. CONSTRUCTION PLANEX is written on top of PLANEX, a knowledge-based computing architecture specifically designed to build process planning systems. PLANEX provides the user with a set of knowledge representation and problem solving tools which facilitate the creation of process planning applications.
