Abstract:

A brief description of the current national research programs that affect the development of specifications is included in this paper. Elements of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) that will produce modifications in specifications for asphalt cement and hot mix asphalt are included. In addition there is a brief discussion of the NCHRP Asphalt Aggregate Mixture Analysis System (AAMAS) project that has recently entered a second phase. The last discussion item relates to the changes in construction control methodology as the state DOTs move from method specifications to statistically based quality control/quality assurance programs.
