Abstract:

The Northern Hydro Division has completed retrofitting the excitation systems on 22 generating units ranging in output from 1 to 95 MWatts. The Big Creek Hydro Project upgraded these systems to provide reduced maintenance, improved voltage stability and automation. This paper discusses several key mechanical and electrical design concerns involved in the retrofit of the various excitation systems. They include: eliminating the obsolete electromechanical regulator for new solid state excitation systems and assuring compatability of the new with the old; optimizing the use of the existing equipment and controls to meet the project's economic goals; obtaining greater system flexibility and improving machine performance in voltage control and regulation; an evaluation of the system to determine if performance goals have been achieved.
