Determining Hydro Project Dependable Capacity

Abstract:

Traditional techniques for estimating a hydro project's dependable capacity are of limited value when evaluating a hydro project in a thermal-based power system. For such systems, a new approach has been developed, which approximates the way the load-carrying capability of a thermal plant is determined in a loss-of-load-probability analysis. This paper describes both the traditional procedures and the proposed new method, and shows how the latter has been applied to a typical project evaluation.
