International Research on Mechanics of River Bank Erosion?A Summary Overview

by Michael F. Spoor, Corps of Engineers, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

A brief overview is presented of research regarding mechanisms of river bank erosion and treatments. In the research river planforms, water stages, currents, waves, ice sediments, bed geometries, bank stability and soils characteristics and navigation and structure impacts were evaluated. The significance of bank seepage and weathering, and of inchannel forces, and bank resistance to these mechanisms were established and protection location and treatment extents determined. Additional research is proposed to better define bank failures and failed soil and recently deposited sediment erosion along rivers with navigation pools.
