Abstract:

A two-dimensional finite element model has been developed to simulate the transient flow in a variably saturated porous medium for the study of infiltration trenches. Parameters such as soil properties, water table location, initial soil moisture condition, trench geometry, and surface runoff hydrograph at the facility site are specified, and routing is performed to find infiltration rate, water depth and storage in the trench, and overflow, if any. A laboratory model has been used to test the validity of the finite element model and an infiltration model developed by Y. Fok and his colleagues.
