Abstract:

An alternative cooling system study was performed for the Damietta Combined Cycle Plant in Egypt. The alternatives included spray canals, helper cooling tower and once-through cooling. Factors such as capital and operating costs, maintenance and limited space on the site, led to rejection of the first two alternatives and the selection of once-through cooling. An important factor in the study was the effect of near zero river flow on the mixing zone size and on the recirculation into the intake. Analytical and physical model studies were performed to optimize the location and configuration of the intake and discharge structures.
