Abstract:

The wake, created by injecting dye into the recirculating zone of a sudden lateral expansion in a shallow open channel, is examined experimentally for a range of bed-friction influence. Dye concentration measurements were made in the recirculating zone and in the wake using a colorimeter. For a given channel expansion, the width of the wake decreases with the increase of bed-friction influence. The wake width eventually becomes very small compared with the width of the channel expansion, when bed friction is the dominant influence to the mixing processes. Formulae for the wake widths are obtained for both limits of deep and shallow flows.
