Greenhouse Effect on Estuarine Saltwater Intrusion

Abstract:

A report by the British Department of the Environment calls for research into the effect of a rise in world temperatures on sea levels. Model studies should investigate changes in the pattern of coastal erosion and deposition, as well as the effect of new coastal defences, and the potential incursion of salt water into freshwater resources should also be evaluated. This paper addresses the later problem as it pertains to increased saltwater intrusion into rivers due to higher sea levels and lower upland discharges, caused by the greenhouse effect.
