Abstract:

As an integral part of the design process, a comprehensive hydrologic, hydraulic and sediment transport analysis was completed of the proposed Unser Boulevard crossing of Calabacillas Arroyo, located near Albuquerque, New Mexico. The project had three major objectives: to detain stormwater to protect downstream facilities; to mitigate the possibility of a sediment plug in the Rio Grande; and to provide a roadway for Unser Boulevard across the arroyo. Conceptual design called for an embankment across the arroyo with a trapezoidal low flow channel opening to pass flows up to the 100-year flood, and a dip crossing functioning as a spillway for larger flows. Results of the investigation were invaluable to design process, providing specific recommendations to the proposed design necessary to improve hydrologic, hydraulic and sediment transport performance.
