Areal Sampling Techniques

Part of: Sediment Transport Modeling

Abstract:

Three areal methods, commonly used for sampling the coarser surface layer of gravel-bed streams, are examined. An idealized sediment deposit, that consists of cubic particles and accounts for porosity, is used to examine the properties of these sampling methods. Expressions for converting an areal sample to an equivalent volumetric sample are proposed.
