Abstract:

A deterministic optimization model is described which allows to schedule the production of a predominantly-hydroelectric power system. Demand and exogenous inflows are assumed known with certainty. The model can handle a detailed representation of the hydraulic system, thermal production, import and export markets and transmission limitations. The nonlinear nature of production curves of hydro plants is explicitly formulated. The associated large scale nonlinear programming problem is solved by a specialized solution method based on the specific structure of this problem. Complete data management systems have been developed to implement this tool in Hydro-Quebec medium and short term planning horizons. Possible improvements and further uses of the model are already considered.
