An Expert System for Groundwater Management with Applications to Collier County, FL

by George Shih, South Florida Water Management, District, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Environmental Engineering

Abstract:

This paper describes techniques used in frequency analysis, time series model building, forecasting, up-dating, and mapping. Domain knowledge of experts is transferred into the system in four steps: 1) Lay out the system structure for data flow, model-interaction within the system and presentation of results to users. 2) Proposing suitable families of models and the identification of a specific model. This is the art of this system. 3) Implementation of algorithms to update the model-coefficient and results comparison. The system is able to improve its performance from new data. 4) Abstraction of the results to present a synopsis. The system was built from off-the-shelf packages. Step 3 is completed in a main frame computer, then the results are distributed to personal computers.
