Abstract:

This study was done to investigate the feasibility of developing an Expert System for application in environmental hazard management and control. The specific objective of the study was to concentrate the currently available knowledge, and to make such knowledge readily accessible for preliminary hazard evaluation, with the minimum of inputs. It was concluded that neither the conventional algorithmic approaches, nor the new wave of rule-based systems would be adequate by themselves for this purpose. However, a hybrid of algorithmic and heuristic approaches was found to be best suited for this application. A prototype system developed on this basis is presented in this paper.
