Abstract:

This paper is part of an integrated study of the coastal environment of the county of Marica, Rio de Janeiro, where the environmental alterations of the urban expansion phenomenon were monitored. The adopted methodology in this work is based on the interpretation of data obtained from aerophotographies and orbital images from LANDSAT-TM taken from 1964 through 1986. Thus it was possible to prepare maps of land use/land cover in the years of 1964, 1976 and 1986. From these source maps, the geographical information system (S.A.G.A.) generated new maps showing the observed changes in land use/land cover, regarding their location, direction and extension. These new maps are referred to as 'derived maps'. Thus, the urban expansion areas are detected and later on they are characterized through field work where data related to human aspects are gathered with the help of question forms and interviews. From them, information is gathered on settlements, housing, population, production activities and life styles. Additional aspects of the study and study results are discussed.
