Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Abstract:

The fishing communities studied in this paper, although influenced by the more important urban growth movement of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, have reacted in a different manner to the urbanization process, maintaining 'old' ways of life and spatial forms while the 'new' ones are being established. It is precisely this co-existence of the 'old' and the 'new' that marks the particular character of this portion of the space of Marica. Thus, this study intended to investigate the organization of a portion of the space of Marica, trying to understand the transformation process in its spatial projection and its relation to environmental conditions. Subjects covered include study methodology, population structure, occupational categories, environmental interaction, and others.
