Abstract:

Principles of General System Theory and Energy Analysis are used to study the best management technique al Lagoa dos Patos (in southern Brazil), including its watershed and contiguous continental shelf. This synthesis will provide a framework to solve specific problems raised by the development and exploitation of these systems. Due to the large scale involved (around 202,978 km2) and to their characteristics of cascading systems, the Lagos dos Patos Complex shows that most of the energy involved are controled by the inputs. Consequently, management efforts should be concentrated in the inputs, too.
