Stabilization Attempts: Westhampton Beach, N.Y.

by John A. Black, Suffolk Community Coll, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Barrier Islands: Process and Management

Abstract:

The barrier island at Westhampton Beach, N.Y. and its associated inlets have been the sites of numerous management and stabilization projects. Most of these projects have been technically flawed and have exacerbated rather than alleviated the problems along this barrier island; moreover, they have failed to consider that this area is but a part of an interdependent coastal system. As a result, projects implemented along one section of this barrier beach have adversely impacted other sections downcurrent, necessitating additional projects.
