Abstract:

Laboratory model tests results for the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow rectangular foundations supported by granular columns made in weak clay have been presented. In all cases, the cross sections of the granular columns were kept equal to the plan of the model foundations. The ultimate bearing capacity for strip foundations obtained from the model test results has been compared with the existing theories. An approximate relationship for the ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular foundations is suggested.
