Abstract:

Laboratory model test results for the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow strip foundations supported by a stiff clay layer underlain by a weaker clay layer have been presented. The model test results have been compared with the existing theories. Based on this comparison, it appears that the theories of Meyerhof and Hanna (1978) and Mitchell, et al. (1972) give reasonably good results.
