Caissons in Uplift in Sandy Soils

Abstract:

This paper describes the results of 10 full scale pullout tests conducted on short rigid caissons. Diameters ranged from 30 to 34 inches (760 to 860 mm) and lengths from 7 to 10 feet (2.1 to 3.1 m). Caissons were subjected to a maximum 200 kip (890 N) uplift force inclined at a 12.5 degree angle to the vertical. Materials tested ranged from clean to silty or clayey sand or gravel. A tentative correlation between standard penetration resistance and skin friction was developed.
